Week 10 - Evaluation of our Choreography

This week was our last session before our choreography assessment, we used this time to go over timings of our sections and changed any movements or transitions we felt could be better and cleaner. We then ran our piece a few times to ensure everything ran smoothly and that the new section worked with the music.

Reflecting back on these past weeks of creating our choreography, I feel our starting objective has been achieved. Our piece set out to create a ten-minute piece based on conformity with the end message to the audience being: to not be afraid of your individuality.

Our piece portrays this message, as the first section is all about us being in unison and looking around to see what everyone is doing and if one person was to change or go at a different time, we would look at them as if they were wrong. The second section then shows us trying to break into our individuality and sees the use of more duets and improvisation to show this idea but we wanted to portray that it is a struggle and not easy to stand out and follow the crowd. This then leads us to our final section where we incorporate the idea of solos which all happen at the same time to convey the idea of individuality and not conforming to the crowd.

Overall, I feel we have worked really well as a group and have all added our own ideas and movements. We have incorporated a lot of different formations in our piece as well as the use of choreographic devices, such as: unison, cannon and accumulation. Whilst choreographing we have also used the choreographic processes we learnt about at the start of term, which were: the translation task and the chance method, this really helped us generate a lot of movements and unique ideas in separate households as well as in the studio.

We have also faced some challenges over these past few weeks, timing has been one of our biggest as we would often choreograph first and then put that specific section to music and sometimes it wouldn’t go with that section in the music, so we would either have to change the timing or save that section for later on in the piece. Timing is also a massive factor in our piece, as when we all need to be together it needs to look as if we’re one person and if one person is not meant to be in time, it needs to be obvious that they are not in time instead of looking like someone has actually got the wrong timing.

Over the next few days, we are going to continue to run the piece and ensure we all know the timings and spacing before the choreography assessment next week.

The video below is our last section which we have been working on and improving the timing and transitions from different sections:

  1. It's really interesting to read about the intentions you had for this piece and I'm glad that they've been achieved! I like that you have included the choreographic methods and devices you have used to help show your stimulus in the piece. Is there any changes you have made recently or do you have any plans to change anything? How have you used extrinsic and intrinsic feedback to improve your group dance?

    1. Thankyou for your comment! During the past few days we made changes to our end section of our piece as we felt it could be better, we also changed the transitions so the piece ran more smoothly and linked. We have also used extrinsic feedback from our teacher and our peers in class and well as intrinsic as we have watched back the video of our final draft and reflected on how we can make sections look better and cleaner.

  2. It's really good how you have kept these starting objectives in mind during the choreographic process as it is clear in your piece that you have achieved what you set out to do. Do you feel that feedback from others has helped the creative process?

    1. Thankyou! I really feel that the feedback we have received has helped massively as we have been able to work on things we never thought of ourselves and it is interesting to get the audiences perspective and hear how the piece made them feel and how it impacted them.

  3. Your development of this piece has been really interesting to read about and I find your concept very interesting and unique. As you have mentioned that you have struggled with timing in part of your piece and paths you could take to rectify this, which did you choose? How have you corrected this?

    1. Thankyou Eloisa! Timing is such a huge part in our piece so we have spent lots of rehearsal time going over counts and ensuring it fits with the music. This has just been something that has taken a lot of practice as well as a lot of help from each other to get the correct timing but I feel this worked really well for us and it allowed us to get used to the counts of the music as well as understand the choreography better so then our performance quality comes more naturally to us.
