Week 1- Art as a Political Tool

During this lesson in choreography, we got into our house groups which consisted of five separate groups. In these five groups, we were given an image which was an art piece as a political tool. For each picture we had three minutes to write any thoughts, feelings or ideas of what we thought the image could portray, as we got to the last few pictures it got harder to think of different ideas to what everyone else had already said and this was where we really had to think outside of the box and look further into the pictures.

As a class, we then discussed each image and what our thoughts were, we then were told what each image actually represented and this is when we learnt they were all art as a political tool. After our discussion, we decided between our selves one image to create a sequence of four counts of eight.

My group chose the image below which is was about a protest in Chile for women’s rights. We used the move on the image as a starting point as well as the idea of being close together and staggered in formation to portray the idea of being at the protest. As well as, hand gestures across our eyes and mouth to represent the bandana across their eyes and mouth.

Overall, I found this task really interesting and a useful way to start and create a phrase. I enjoyed using this choreographic method and will be using this in the future for our final group piece.

  1. You have described the task really clearly and described how you were inspired by certain aspects, such as the bandannas and positioning of the women in the stimulus you chose. Did you find this task to be a useful method of generating movement, or did you struggle to feel inspired?

    1. Thankyou Daisy! I found this task really useful and interesting, as we were able to use the movement show in the picture as a starting point and build on this. We also watched a clip of the protest in Chile and this helped us a lot with different movements and gesture ideas.

  2. This vlog gives an in-depth descriptions of the task at hand and clearly describes what the lesson itself entailed. You can clearly see that you used the image to help spark ideas for movement. Other than using formations, did you use any other choreographic devices to help portray your ideas?

  3. As mentioned in the other comments, you've clearly described the task and how you used the stimulus to create movement. In the blog post, you have mentioned that you want to use this technique in your group choreography. Is there any particular reason for this? or just because you enjoyed it?

    1. Thankyou for your comment! Yes I found this task enjoyable as it was interesting to see other people’s perspective and I feel it will be useful to use in the group task as it allows the movement to have a meaning and you can always relate back to the image.
