Week 2- The Chance Method

In this week’s lesson of choreography, we were in our five house groups again and we all had to bring in a stimulus, we then did the same task as last week and we wrote ideas, thoughts and feelings about each other’s stimulus, we spent two minutes on each one, it was a very interesting task as everyone's stimuli was different. As a class, we then said a word each for each stimulus and if we found any of the words interesting or we liked them we wrote them down.

At the end of the discussion we had to choose three words from across all the stimuli, our group chose the words: Sinister, Blindness and Protection. We decided on these words as we thought they were very different to one another however, they would still work and link well as they contrast.

After choosing our three words, we then had to create four different movements for each word and these could vary from a hand gesture to one count of eight. Once we had created all the movements, we numbered them one to twelve. We then moved onto the chance method this was done by rolling a twelve – sided dice and this would determine the order each number would be showcased in the sequence, the order was: 1, 11, 6, 9, 8, 9, 6, 2, 10, 5, 12, 7, 10, 3, 4.

We then put the movements together, this meant adapting as well as adding traditions to allow the piece to flow and run smoothly. Once we had completed the sequence, we chose a number one to four, this would determine our music for the sequence, we chose number three which was the song Legions (War) by Zoe Keating and it worked really well with our sequence and we were happy with our finished product.

Overall, this choreographic method was very interesting as you are constantly building up the phrase during the lesson and it is exciting to see how it turns out at the end once all the movements are connected and in a completely different order, this will be a great choreographic method to use in our group piece.

This is the image of our stimulus we brought in for class.

  1. Your description of the task is very detailed, and I found it interesting to read about your opinions of the technique. I was wondering what movements you did to represent the words you chose. Did you use any choreographic devices?

    1. Thankyou for your comment! In our piece we used a variety of different movements some being up to a count of eight whereas some were more of a gesture for example the word sinister, we used a lot of head and the use of the upper body whereas, for the word blindness we used gestures. We didn’t add any choreographic devices into the piece but if we were to do it again we would have included a range of different choreographic devices.

  2. These tasks were well described and your three words were very interesting!
Did you perhaps face any challenges throughout this creative process? If not, would you change anything if you were to complete this task again?

    1. Thankyou for your comment Caitlyn! We found it difficult to put transitions in between each movement when rearranging the sequence and if I was to do the task again I would like to add a range of different choreographic devices in the piece.

    1. Thankyou for your comment! As a group, we found a variety of different images and this one really stood out because there was a lot of different ideas and opinions between us about the image and this allowed us to really challenge ourselves when creating the movement.
