Week 3 - Translation Task

In this week’s choreography lesson, we started a new task in our groups which was called the translation task.

For this task we had to stand in a line, the three people at the back of the line looked away whilst the person at the front of the line got given a word which they then had to create one count of eight of movement to. Once the person at the front of the line created their movement, they then showed the second person in the line the movement twice, this then got passed onto the third and then the fourth but they could only see the movement once.

Once everyone in the line had learnt the movement, the last and first person would dance it together and then as a group we could see where movement has changed or where it differs. We repeated this process four times, so everyone had a chance to make up a movement as well as learn it.

We then learnt the original and new motif for all four words; they varied from heavy, gather, itchy and loud, this was really interesting to see how the motifs changed within the task and how the new movement came from the original movement. After we had learnt all the new and original motifs, we put them all together and used a range of choreographic devices such as: cannon, repetition, unison and accumulation to link all the motifs together and allow the piece to flow.

We then took it in turns to watch the piece and review the dance, this could just be saying pause, faster or slower in certain sections to allow the piece to come together and have a range of dynamics. We then put the whole piece to the music and decided on counts, ensuring when we were in unison and we were all together as well as, the cannon being clear to the audience so it didn’t look messy or unrehearsed.

Overall, this choreographic method was really enjoyable as well as challenging as there was lots of different versions on phrases to remember. This would be a great starting point to use in our group piece as the movement comes from a word and this then makes up a whole section or phrase.

  1. I liked how you have voiced your own thoughts in this blog about how you found it interesting to see all the motifs changing as the task developed. You mentioned that you took it in turn to watch and review some sections of the dance. Did you find it interesting to watch the sections that you and your group created? If so why?

    1. Thankyou for your feedback Lucy! Yes I found it interesting when we all watched the different sections as it allowed us all as a group to give our opinions on the formation, timing and dynamics and it was good they we all had our ideas as well as our opinion on the piece incorporated into each of the sections.

  2. I enjoy how you have managed to describe in detailed ideas you did as a group to enhance and alter the final phrase of movement, including different dynamics and additional pauses. Did you find that by voicing ways of improvement, the movement phrase itself improved? Do you think that this may be something you may use when creating your final piece and how do you think it may help with the final outcome?

    1. Thankyou for your comment Storm. Yes I felt that by all of having our say and watching the piece helped improve the piece. I feel this would be a great starting point for group choreography and this technique could be repeated multiple times to generate different movement ideas.

  3. It's really interesting to read about how you developed the original and translated motif to create a dance. You've mentioned the different choreographic devices you used to make the sequence flow, specifically unison and canon. Did you use different spacing or patterns in your piece?

  4. I liked reading about your experience of this tasks compared to how I felt during the lesson, do you feel this choreographic technique could relate to your stimulus in your group piece?
